New York, a city of hybrids. For immigrants, is it a place where dreams come true, or where the impossibilities of dreams are laid bare? After failing in his restaurant business, Lu now works as a food deliveryman, and for him, New York casts only a cruel shadow of despair. His bicycle is stolen, the home he struggled to secure turns out to be a scam, and all he has left is the fact that his wife and daughter will be arriving the next day to see him. Lucky Lu chronicles, through tracking shots, the 48 hours in which Lu endures the worst day of his life and then roams the streets of New York with his young daughter, Yaya. When Lu’s dry, weary gaze overlaps in the frame with a child’s innocent one, the film stops lingering in despair and instead seeks out the possibility of a single remaining ray of light.
