Program Note
Richard Linklater’s new project was a perilous adventure. Rather than simply recreating the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960), he sought to capture the film’s energy and freedom through black-and-white photography, outdoor shoots with natural light, and unnamed actors to portray the Nouvelle Vague pioneers (including Godard, François Truffaut, Jean Seberg, and Jean-Paul Belmondo). With surprising resemblance to their real-life counterparts, the actors create an elaborate fantasy that could be mistaken for reality. Based on research and documentation by film scholars, Linklater has ensured all dialogue and action reflects historical fact. Audiences once again encounter the young Godard—cheerful, charming, and sometimes aggressive. But Nouvelle Vague is more than simple film history. It’s a delightfully enchanting comedy about innovative young dreamers who, tired of everyday life, subverted traditional film grammar to launch a new wave in the late 1950s. Linklater ultimately aims to convey the passion of these dreamers on their journey to becoming future filmmakers. This film is a must-see for anyone dreaming of making films. (SEO Seunghee)
