Program Note
Seventeen-year-old Johanne lives in Oslo, Norway, where she falls in love with Johanna, her French teacher and textile artist. While she learns to knit at her teacher’s home, Johanne’s romantic imagination and sexual curiosity intensify. She begins documenting her emotions and experiences, capturing the heated passion of first love in writing. When Johanne’s mother and poet grandmother discover her writing, they are initially concerned about the relationship between student and teacher, minor and adult. But soon, they recognize its literary potential and consider publication possibilities. The typical emotions of first love transform into a unique queer coming-of-age story through the intellectual and laid-back humor, refreshing dramaturgy, and the symbolic imagery woven throughout the film. This is the third installment of Dag Johan Haugerud’s ‘Sex, Love, Dream’ trilogy, winning the Golden Bear at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. (LEE Juhyun)
