Program Note
"Is this love?" Lovers who were drawn to each other like magnets and loved passionately end up embracing each other again after jealousy, doubt, and hatred. The dance theater piece ‘In-I (En-Je)’ is a work that captures all the processes and forms of love. With the sweat stains still on the stage walls, the two people who trace the trajectory of a love entangled with ecstasy and madness with their entire bodies are French actress Juliette Binoche and British dancer Akram Khan. Becoming collaborators in each other′s dancing and acting, Binoche and Khan at times hold hands earnestly like seekers on a path, and at others, fiercely confront each other like savage enemies. For them, the stage preparation process is not simply a time to learn external lines and movements; it is an internal work of confronting their individual experiences and traumas. Marion Stalens′ documentary, which captured the intense 7-month preparation process, has been woven together with footage of the 2008 live performance, revived 17 years later by Juliette Binoche as the documentary In-I In Motion.
