Program Note
After recovering from leukemia, Jang Juhee, who once dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, begins working at a center for independent living for people with disabilities. There, she meets documentary director Bu Seongpil, disabled and bedridden Seon Cheol-gyu, and In-sook, who lost a family member in the Sewol ferry tragedy. Shaped by childhood memories of domestic violence and years of illness-induced isolation, Jang’s gaze and inner world begin to expand through these individuals. Narrated in Jang’s own voice, the film follows her personal journey alongside the three individuals, while also confronting realities of Korean society, such as the right to mobility for people with disabilities, the investigation into the delayed rescue efforts on the Sewol ferry, the Jeju April 3rd Uprising, and the struggles of contract workers. In this sense, this film is both an intimate, self-addressed essay from Jang and a letter of friendship and solidarity from the three directors to all the ‘Juhees’ of the world. (JO Ji-hoon)
