Program Note
In the late 1990s, a gang called ‘Sikgupa’ ruled their neighborhood. With a name that means ‘the family clan’ the mob expands its influence with strong solidarity and exceptional fighting skills, eventually taking control of a small city. At the center of it all are formidable fighters, each with their own specialty: Soon-tae (Jo Woo-jin), Pan-ho (Park Jihwan), and Kang-pyo (Jung Kyung-ho). Their fi ghting styles are as varied as their dreams for the future. Years later, when the time comes to decide the next boss, the three are forced into an unavoidable brawl—though the way it unfolds looks far from ordinary. One might even call it a ‘You Be the Boss’ showdown. Boss is a refreshing comic action fi lm that drives its blood-pumping, nerve-racking ‘boss concession battle’ with constant laughter. The sly performances of actors who are as funny in presence as they are in delivery, paired with distinctive action sequences, heighten the entertainment and spark laughter. With brisk pacing, a solid structure, and powerful comic elements, this is a robust crowd-pleasing action comedy. (HONG Eunmi)
