Seorim (Kang Hae-rim), who works in a hospital’s administration office, is cornered financially. She can’t afford her insurance premiums, has fallen into the clutches of private lenders, and is on the run. To make matters worse, her live-in boyfriend cheats on her and leaves, and she has no one to lean on. As if that weren’t enough, Seorim unexpectedly encounters Sumi (Bae Gang-hee), who is entangled in the death of her twin sister Heerim (also played by Kang Hae-rim). Be My Baby gradually begins to reveal its true face. At first, it seems to trace the bleak life of a woman trapped in desperate circumstances, only to inject the tension of a revenge thriller, and ultimately approach the terrifying reality of individuals who end up utterly alone but cannot live in isolation. Be My Baby is a merciless survival tale disguised as a crime drama. The sorrowful struggle of its characters—laid bare to crushing despair and loneliness—infects the screen with its heavy, suffocating air. Director Yoo Jong-seok, who garnered attention with his short films Aquamarine (2019) and Light It Up at 2 AM (2022), makes a chilling and compelling feature debut. (HONG Eunmi)
