Program Note
Ah-Chung lives with his dysfunctional family in a shanty town next to a wildlife reservation zone. His mentally ill brother almost gets knocked over by a truck intended to illegally dump waste there. To appease the gods and to rid the family of bad luck and other mysterious miseries, his mother makes Ah-Chung join a religious performing troupe. Though reluctant, he does what is expected, yet good luck and the gods are no where in sight and terrible tragedies occur. This film searches the soul of Taiwan against the sacrifices being made for Western industrialization.
