Program Note
KOO Jun-Tek (KIM Seung-ho) is the head of a large, three-generation family. When his daughter begins to work at the same company, he becomes nervous, always wondering if his life at the workplace is being exposed. One day, his boss comes with a request. His mistress is opening a dance studio and she needs some help. Koo reluctantly accepts, and is eventually promoted as a reward. A Petty Middle Manager is a cheerful family comedy directed by LEE Bong-rae, who excelled in making true commercial films - films that spoke of regular people and thus were beloved by the public. Koo loses and the regains his job, all the while going through a hilarious series of events. In particular, the comedic acting of Kim as a cheerleader, directing a crowd is notably memorable. The film is an illustration of the trials of the everyday salary man, reflecting a society in midst of rapid modernization.
