Program Note
The film is an adaptation of the play A Happy Day of Jinsa Maeng written by O Yeong-jin. It is also the first Korean film to win an award at an international film festival. Local officer Maeng is excited about his glorious future since his daughter is engaged to a son of a minister. However, his joy turns to tears when he hears the rumor that the minister’s son is a cripple. Unable to call off the engagement with a family of such power, he comes up with an idea to have a slave girl Eep-boon take his daughter’s place. The man of this year’s festival retrospective, Kim Seung-ho, stars as Mr. Maeng and displays an impressive performance. JO Mi-ryeong who played Chun-Hyang Story in the 1955 film by LEE Gyu-hwan stars as Eep-boon and shows off her traditional beauty. With various characters and incidents happening non-stop, director LEE Byung-iI directs the film with brilliant details. (CHO Young-jung)
