Program Note
The film for which Kim was awarded Best Actor at the 1960 Asia-Pacific Film Festival. Mr. Kim (KIM Seung-ho) is the happy father of two sons and three daughters. Always optimistic and romantic, he is called "Romance Papa" by his wife and children. Every day, his only wish is to accommodate all the needs of his family, which is impossible with his meager salary. One day, he is caught in a wind of layoffs and is let go from his job. Not knowing what to do next, Mr. Kim is unable to break the news to his family. Of the many portrayals of fathers in Kim′s career, this film represents the role model of a father in a democratic society. Although his family is thrown under crisis, Kim does not fall into anguish and despair; instead, he manages to find triumph through humor and laughter. There are many memorable sequences in this family comedy, such as the opening where each actor introduces their character, or the scene where each family member comes up with a different fantasy based on a scenario written by the eldest son. These directional touches are thanks to SHIN Sang-ok, whose clever and modern direction set a unique tone in this film. (CHO Young-jung)
