Program Note
Sweet Dream is the oldest existing film in Korean history. But Ae-sun, the main character, is not a naive and conventional woman. Pursuing money and sexual desire, she abandons her family to shack up with her lover in a hotel. Upon realizing that he is a penniless imposter, however, she turns him over to the police and pursues a glamorous ballet dancer. This film provides an excellent opportunity to view Seoul in the mid-1930s, also to glimpse the elegant dancing of CHO Taek-won who was widely acknowledged as Korea’s greatest dancer.
