Program Note
Mt. Sahwa is KIM Seung-ho′s final work, which he was also involved in as a producer. In Busan, 1950, KIM Eun-pal (KIM Seung-ho) gathers a crew to search for gold that was hidden by Japanese officials. Seven men form a group and leave for a nearby extinct volcano. However, the mountain is actually a hideout for Communist guerrillas from North Korea. Secret agents are sent from the north to protect Kim Il-sung′s younger brother, who is at the hideout. Meanwhile, the South Korean army sends agents of its own to capture him. Although the gang of seven seems to have randomly come together, their secrets are revealed one by one, and the location of the gold becomes a mystery. Mt. Sahwa is a lesser-known masterpiece from director KOH Young-nam, who is better known for The Shower. The film wears the guise of being an anti-Communist film, but it is actually a family drama within the structure of a mystery film. Each character has a painful family history, and even the main villain is established as the brother of KIM Il-sung. Perhaps that is the reason why KIM Seung-ho, who was the definitive father figure in Korean cinema, was interested by this story.
