Program Note
KIM Hak-kyu (KIM Seung-ho), who owns an Eastern medicine shop, was born and raised in the neighborhood. His single-minded stubbornness causes conflict within his family. Kim is also jealous of CHOI Do-yeol, a gynecologist who has opened a new clinic and is drawing away patients. Kim′s eldest daughter falls in love with Choi, and his son moves out with his newly-pregnant girlfriend. To top it all off, Choi runs for city council. Eager to outdo Choi, Kim throws himself into the political arena. Under the Sky of Seoul is a comedy that portrays the journey of a patriarch who reconciles with his family through a series of failures. It is also a film that showcases the pleasures of ensemble casting, which was a popular approach at the time. Noted actors Kim, HUR Jang-gang, KIM Hee-gab, and KIM Jin-gyu all portray neighbors living on the same street. After the April 19 Revolution, KIM Seung-ho was accused of having been involved with corrupt elections and was once blacklisted from the Actor′s Association. The fact that his character finds the opportunity to become a regular father through losing an election is a sly reference to Kim′s own situation. The plot is a satire of the politics of the time, and it also reflects how Kim himself could finally be a normal actor only after the controversy and scandal had passed.
