How can the feeling of futility be healed? The Daniels’ answer is to regard the self here and now as a hypothesis of the future. To see the present self as a potential version among the countless possible selves and, in doing so, affirm who we are in the present. Rather than dwelling on what she might have become, Evelyn, who could have been a singer, chef, actor, or kung fu master, connects the multiverse to her present through ‘jumps’ between worlds and realizes that her present self, too, has the power to change the future. We trap ourselves in futility by defining our present life as a single world and resigning ourselves to it. But when worlds with ‘hot dog fingers’ and ‘piano-playing feet’ can exist, what world could possibly be impossible? Anything is possible, if only we accept that the seeds of countless worlds already exist within our hearts. Even if that were untrue, Everything Everywhere All at Once is the kind of film that makes you want to close your eyes tight and believe it anyway. (AHN Sihwan)
