Born in 1947, Ann Hui was educated at the University of Hong Kong and the London Film School. Hui began her career in television before making her feature film debut with The Secret (1979), playing a pivotal role in the Hong Kong New Wave movement. Across a diverse range of genres, she has long captured the complexities of life and the spirit of each times through acclaimed works such as Boat People (1982), Summer Snow (1995), Eighteen Springs (1997), A Simple Life (2011), and The Golden Era (2013). She has been honored with the Best Director Award six times at the Hong Kong Film Awards and three times at the Golden Horse Awards. In recognition of her monumental contributions and lifelong dedication to cinema, Hui was awarded the Asian Filmmaker of the Year at BIFF 2014 and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival 2020.
