To mark its 30th edition in 2025, the Busan International Film Festival launched
its new Competition section and created a new trophy for the Busan Award.
Designed by internationally acclaimed Thai filmmaker and installation artist Apichatpong Weerasethakul
and produced in collaboration with Korea’s SWNA, the trophy symbolizes a vessel
that holds the filmmakers and their stories as they come together at the Busan International Film Festival.
With an object reminiscent of a heart, the trophy carries the presence of life and time.
Through its mirror-like surface and fluid curves, it is intended to reflect not only the recipient,
but also the people and surrounding landscapes around them.
The Busan Award trophy is presented to the winners of the five Competition categories —
Best Film, Special Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actor, and Artistic Contribution —
as well as to the recipients of The Asian Filmmaker of the Year, Korean Cinema Award, and New Currents Award.
“Imagine the filmmaker setting this vessel by a window. As the light passes through, it creates shifting shadows and colors on the walls. The bubbles and curves bend the day's movement-sunrise to dusk, seasons to seasons. It becomes a quiet reminder of time.”
— Apichatpong Weerasethakul
