New Currents Award

The only featured competition at PIFF is awarded in ‘New Currents’ section. The New Currents Award serves to promote emerging film talent in Asia by selecting the best new film by an Asian director. Selected by a jury of eminent film professionals, the awards guarantee a 10,000 USD cash award to the winning director.

    In order to celebrate the accomplishments of a filmmaker who has shown the most activity in improving and developing the Asian Film industry in the past year, we're honored to present "The Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award”. And the first recipient of this year's prestigious award is, Mohsen Makhmalbaf.

    Mohsen Makhmalbaf

    Well known for the epitome of Iran Cinema, Makhmalbaf contended in the Cannes Film Festival with Kandahar, a film that deals with the harsh reality of Afghanistan. He has spent a great deal of time and effort to revitalize the culture and children’s education in Afghanistan. By establishing the Afghan Children Education Movement (ACEM) in December of 2002, He raised $2 Million (US) for charity for Afghanistan Children. In fact, he is currently producing a film in Afghanistan to help Afghanistan rekindle their culture, especially in cinema. Specifically, he has sponsored the establishment of Kabul Film in Kabul, and he is in the process of training 20 Afghan youths in film production. Also, he has encouraged his oldest daughter, Samira Makhmalbaf, to make the film, At Five in the Afternoon in Afghanistan. He also produced the first full-length feature film, Osama, after the fall of the Taliban regime. As a stellar director, Makhmalbaf has produced many works that will remain in the history of cinema and devoted himself to rebuild the film industry and children’s education. We commemorate Makhmalbaf’s works that have improved the overall reputation of Asian filmmakers and the film industry.

    Korean Cinema Award

    The Korean Cinema Award is presented annually to those who have made significant contributions to Korea films by introducing them to the global film industry.

    In recognition of the importance of finding an International audience for Korean Cinema, the Korean Cinema Award is granted by PIFF's organizing Committee to those who have made significant contribution in introducing Korean films to the international film community. This year's recipients are Park Byoung-yang, the president of Asia Film Production and Lee Bong-u, the president of Cine Quanon Production. Through their productions, they made a great contribution to introduce Korean films to Japan. Since 1984, Asia Film Production has hold numerous Korean retrospective and helped Korean films distributed throughout Japan. By distributing many Korean films such as Sopyonje, Shiri, and Joint Security Area JSA, Cine Quanon has pioneered in popularizing Korean films to Japanese audience.
