Program Note
A favorite subject of filmmakers is ′youth′, especially stories of young people struggling for love in their suffocating reality. Deep Breath, beginning with a scene of a body pulled out from a river, depicts the stories of youth with a focus on despair rather than hope, and on the loss rather than the achievement of love. When they can no longer pay the rent, the landlord evicts Kamran and Mansour, and they move from one cheap hotel to another. They steal a cellular phone and a car just to make a phone call and to go on a trip only to end up wandering around the city. The people they encounter in the meantime are all selfish liars -like the twin brothers they meet in a hotel. One rainy night, a woman named Ayda appears before them. Mansour, attracted by the cheerful and active Ayda, begins dating her; meanwhile Kamran, left alone in their hotel room, dies vomiting blood. Confused by Kamran′s sudden death, Mansour leaves the city with Ayda, something he could not do with Kamran, eventually encountering yet more despair. (Michelle Sohn)
