Program Note
The introduction for Love Is Not a Sin Is hard to grasp. Is this a love story, or a horror flick? This question, posed at the very beginning of the film, is difficult to answer. Two best friends: Man-Man and Moon. Man-Man mistakenly sees Moon as a man but as soon as Moon′s twin brother appears she falls hard for him. But this is not a love triangle story. The core of this film is that there is a great secret between the brother and sister. Deformity, incest, baby abandoning, murder, and other atrocities briefly place this film in the horror and thriller genres, but soon, we see the film transforming into a melodrama and a comedy. This bluntly reveals the evil instinct that lies just beneath our human surfaces, as revealed through the events playing out among one female, two siblings, and their families. On top of this dark story Is the joy of mysterious love. However, the film does not fall into the swamp of sappiness by defying conventional narrative and repeatedly defying the audience′s expectations. Following the impulsive movements of a digital video camera, one woman′s tale of love is refreshing and loud, like teenage girts chatting. Even though the audience may not want to partake in their gabfest, listening to their sickeningly fantastic stories is plenty amusing. (Kang So-won)
