This film is an adaptation of the 18th Century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses adapted to fit Korea′s Chosun Dynasty period. The Chosun Dynasty had more repressive customs than Europe in the 18th Century, and consequently the clash between customs and desires in the original novel becomes more complicated and yet more intense in this film. Filmed several times by famous directors, in this version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, director E J Yong focuses on visualizing the repressive customs of the Chosun Dynasty. The period costumes-said to have cost nearly 2 million dollars to make-conceals the erotic desire to shed the clothes completely. The magnificent mise-en-scene and the elegant filming style combine to create an exquisite visual treat.
