In many Taiwanese films, Taipei has been described as a gloomy city. The Missing is another Taiwanese film to describe this city as a dystopia. Instead of a complicated narrative, the film describes a picture of dystopia through images of Taipei with a simple story between two people; one looking for a grandson, and the other seeking a grandfather. A grandmother looks for her grandson and a teenager looks for his old grandfather in a park which hasn′t officially opened. The new park is surrounded by steel walls that give the strange impression of being a barrier in people′s relationships. Therefore, a park, the area meant to be a resting place, turns into a maze-like, unstable space. A space where people are unable to meet, even though the missing are nearby. A park in Taipei becomes a manifestation of ′severance′. Through this story of ′not being able to see′, the director Lee Kang-sheng talks about destroyed relationships of Taiwan. Every family member is hiding in his own space; the space isolated from communication. Lee also shows how the main characters′ familiar surrounding ssuddenly become unfamiliar through long takes. As a result, the main characters′ confusion is palpable to the audience. Lee Kang-sheng deals with a theme that is not easy for a new director with a unique style, and also with considerable patience and tenacity. (Kim Ji-seok)
