Program Note
Young director Alireza Amini has been deeply interested in loneliness and the sense of alienation of people in deserted places. Letters in the Wind, his debut feature, was a story of soldiers consoling themselves by listening to recorded tapes of people′s conversations. In his second feature, Tiny Snow flakes, Amini tells a story of two mine keepers protecting an isolated mine. People are vulnerable to loneliness and they cling to even the merest trifle to overcome it. Alireza Amini exquisitely captures such aspects of human psychology. A telescope in Tiny Snowflakes is the only channel to the outside world, as was the tape recorder was in Letters in the Wind. For the mine keepers, the world is always an indirect and distant subject. Therefore, their conversation cannot help but sound hollow. And loneliness always brings a vague sense of waiting and turns abstract objects into concrete objects of longing. The camera depicts the two people′s loneliness through the scenery of the devastated mine and a village in a mountain. The ontological value of human beings is efficiently featured in this film through these two people′s ardent loneliness. (Kim Ji-seok)
