Program Note
A work by Paul Grimault, the great pioneer of French animation, The King and the Mockingbird tells the story of a cross-eyed dictator who lives in a colossal fortress. With its singular imagination, sophisticated audiovisual design and satire, and profound political and philosophical inquiry, the film is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of animation. First completed in 1952 and honored at the Venice Film Festival, the film was later disowned by Grimault, who sought to withdraw and destroy all existing versions before spending decades creating new scenes and finally completing a reedited version in 1980. The film had a profound influence on two masters of Japanese animation, Miyazaki Hayao and Takahata Isao. Miyazaki once said, "It was only after seeing The King and the Mockingbird that I came to understand just how essential it is to use space vertically," and paid passionate homage to the film in his feature directorial debut, Lupin III: The Castle Of Cagliostro. Takahata, for his part, said, “If I hadn’t seen this film, I would never have considered entering the world of animation.” The King and the Mockingbird can be seen as a kind of origin point for the cinematic worlds of Miyazaki and Takahata. It is also one of director Bong Joon-ho’s favorite animated films. (JUNG Hanseok)

Director
Paul GRIMAULT
Paul Grimault was a French animator and filmmaker renowned for his delicate, satirical, and poetic directorial style. His masterpiece, The King and the Mockingbird, began production in 1948 based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, but work was halted in 1952 when the producer released an unfinished version against the director′s wishes. After eventually reclaiming the rights, he combined existing footage with newly created scenes to complete the film in 1980, bringing the project to fruition over a span of more than thirty years.
