Writer Hye-joo (Lee Yuha) is trying her hand at a detective novel for the first time, but things aren’t going as she’d hoped. One day she receives a call from the mother of her ex-husband Tae-jae (Park Jong-hwan) and sets out, beginning an unfamiliar journey. What follows is a series of encounters, some with people from Hye-joo’s past and others arising from relationships in her present. These encounters may have little to do with her original purpose, taking her far off course. On a day she is supposed to meet her boyfriend, for instance, she never sees him and instead finds herself spending time with his son Yul-i (Yoo Myungjo) and his friend Jong-i (Choi Heejin). With Hye-joo leading the way, Some Detective itself takes on the role of a detective of sorts. Following clues from a forgotten past, mistaken assumptions, and traces left by Hye-joo’s own convictions, the film probes the depths of a woman who has temporarily set aside her writing. The smooth, effortless flow of the cuts and the rhythm of the editing recall a detective’s light footsteps, each stride perfectly measured. (JEONG Jihye)
