Where as Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility (1995) served as the quintessential classic lyrical romance, director Georgia Oakley focuses instead on the oppressive social structures and the sheer urgency of survival of the era. The synergy between Daisy Edgar-Jones’s deep internal performance and Esme Creed-Miles’s raw energy transforms the sisters’ coming-of-age journey into a modern, multidimensional portrait set against the realistic miseen- scene of the 19th-century English countryside.
