Program Note
Jennifer accuses her classmate Alexander of sexual assault, but the small village community they live in believes she is lying, and so she is isolated at school and in village alike. Evidence and court decisions mean nothing where grown-ups lay down their own rules and laws to stick with the flock. In the past, most films dealing with rape or sexual abuse of children focused on the victims and whether they telling the truth, whereas in Flocking, both the victim and suspect appear on screen equally, from the start to the very end. The thoughtful character presentation makes it difficult for the viewers to judge between the girl and the boy. Considered to be an excellent directorial choice, this demands the viewer reflect on the issue by him or herself. No matter who did wrong, they will also suffer greatly, so judgment should be discreet and devoid of prejudice. And the responsibility is expanded to the audience. Flocking is a common instinct, resulting in witch-hunting, which make this film even more outstanding for its severe and stark criticism. (RHEE Soue-won)
