Program Note
An Ethiopian boy, Ephraim, lives off his distant relative, who his dad sent him to after a terrible drought left the family with no food. Ephraim always has a lamb with him; it is his cherished and only friend. Ephraim is scolded not being able to plow a field like any other young man, however, he discovers his talent for cooking. One day, when his uncle declares that the lamb must be butchered for the next religious festival, Ephraim decides to do whatever he can to save the lamb and get back home. Garnering a great deal of press for being the first Ethiopian film ever invited to Cannes, Lamb is about a struggling little boy who is surrounded by a rough environment. Despite the tough life and daily threat of starvation, the natural landscape of Ethiopia is awe-inspiring and fascinating. And it is distinctive that a boy using his wits to survive isn’t overwhelmed by the scenery. The boy is clever and full of wit while the adults are worn out by everyday life. The boy is full of charm; he doesn’t give up on facing the obstacles to fulfill his hopes and reach his goals, no matter how small. The scene where the boy realizes that his lamb is in the same situation as himself. And it drenches our hearts in the pure innocence of a child. (RHEE Soue-won)
