Program Note
Following their mother's death, five vivacious sisters are brought up in a remote village by their grandmother and father in a family ordered by tradition and virtue. The more the girls' desire for love and freedom grows, the harsher their conservative father’s repression becomes. But rebellious sister Lale makes a dramatic bid for freedom. Like many other films depicting women in the patriarchal society of modern Turkey, Mustang follows five girls in danger of forced marriage. Deniz Gamze Erguven’s film overflows with an unambiguous sense of freedom—an exceptionally rare commodity for a Turkish film—and he dwells more on the sisters’ desire for freedom than their tragic suppression. This debut film visualizes the coltish sisters playing in water or sneaking out to a football game, full of the fervor of pure youth. The last sister’s elaborate escape plan, after witnessing her sisters depart one by one, leaves the viewer with a powerful and lasting impression. Since receiving rave reviews at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Mustang has now been seen all over the world. (RHEE Soue-won)
