Can haiku, a form of Japanese poetry, be animated? The answer is yes. It has been achieved. Winter Days, Matsuo Basho′s famous haiku collection, has now been tumed into an animated film through
collaboration between 35 leading animation artists from all over the world, including the famous Japanese traditional puppet animation writer Kihachiro Kawamoto. ′Renku is a style of poetry typical
of Japanese literature, in which a number of poets participate to create a linked poem by composie verses which are linked to the previous composer′s last syllable but lead into an entirely different world.
Basho and his fellow-poets composed five renku under the title Winter Days.′ The film Winter Days is structured just like the poem - a renku. World-class filmmakers and promising directors worked together to create the film. It is a fascinatine mixture of different animation techniques such as cut-out, puppet, 2D, 3D CG, silhouette, cell, clay animation and paint on glass. Each of the directors contributed an approximately 1-minute long piece to create a 39-minute animation. The short animation is followed by a documentary that presents the production process of all the participants in the project. The 39-minute animation itself is interesting enough, but the second part is also very enjoyable. (Kim Ji-seok)
