Program Note
Director Kore-eda Hirokazu relates the daily lives of modern Japanese society and a young father’s agony through Fukuyama Masaharu’s acting. Nonomiya, a construction company employee, is a householder, lacking nothing. Upon learning that his son Keita is actually the result of a switch at the hospital, he is devastated. Nonomiya plans to restore his blood son Ryuse to their family by exchanging the boys again. There is discussion with the family that has raised Ryuse, but the situation is really horrible. The western legend of ‘Changeling’ was an archetype of predestined tragedy. However, Director Kore-eda’s film is distanced from myth or tragic destiny. The camera set in the daily life cuts across the differences between the tradition and modern times, in economic differences, home and workplace, and legal and medical worlds. Realizing what really counts is the history of time they have spent and accumulated together, not a mere selection between blood or raising, the father and the blood son encounter each other, shedding tears of human love, and by establishing a universal family’s picture.
