Program Note
Vienna 1995, Jasmin, Tamara, Valentin, Senad and Roman, five young people from different ethnical and social backgrounds meet in Vienna and for a short time they share their lives and dreams. At the northern edge of Vienna each of them tries to find their luck. Between jobs, relationships, unwanted pregnancies and repressed experiences from the war in Yugoslavia they try to give each other support, stability, emotional warmth-often in a clumsy way, but always with the deep desire to love and be loved. Their lives touch and then drift apart again. Nordrand is a conglomerate of many things that make up my life. It′s not only about the relationship between two women. While writing the screenplay in 1995, I collected images of the last years and from there it somehow developed. In the beginning it was a wild puzzle of episodes that happened to me or people I knew. I would have to think hard to find the number of scenes that have no personal relationship to me at all. (Barbara Albert)
