Program Note
This film, made to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Keisuke Kinoshita’s birth, condensed his view of art and life through the short period when he was away from the film world, instead of making a loud show of his professional biography. Refusing to produce war-time propaganda films of militarism, Kinoshita returned to his home-town, and carried his sick mother via a handcart for refuge 60 kms away. This journey of love for his mother was the crucial, chosen moment in Kinoshita’s life, whereas the mother’s heart-breaking look, as her son departs for the war-front, at the end of The Army (1944), was the crucial scene of Kinoshita’s films. This problematic scene that provoked the censorship authority’s fury, for its ‘unmanliness,’ is re-enacted in the film as it was, touching the audience’s heart though shown only for a brief moment. Director Keiichi Hara finishes the story with Kinoshita’s return to the film world, then pays homage by showing excerpts from 15 films by Kinoshita for 10 minutes. Keisuke Kinoshita’s portrait is seen through Ryo Kase’s gloomy face, hiding passion inside. (KANG Sowon)
