Program Note
Mariam and Reja are mentally handicapped couple, with a son named Soheil, a fourth grader in an elementary school. Through poorly off, they have a happy life, laughing and making noisy merriments like a group of pals, rather than parents and son. But after Mariam was called to her son′s school, a rift begins in this happy family. Soheil feels ashamed of Mariam, who cannot even express herself poorly, and thinks he has become a laughingstock because of her. Can this family restore their lost happiness? Iranian director Maziar Miri calmly depicts what is happening between the handicapped parents and their son, posing an earnest question about a family and true affection. While dealing with a common human problem, the director also shows the contemporary situation of Iran by showing how Iranians are going through economic sufferings and how they overcome those problems with familial love and care.(KIM Byeongcheol)
