Garin’s debut feature is a glossy drama about a sexual triangle, much influenced by the early features of Godard and Truffaut. The three central characters are yuppies (‘young urban professionals’). Harris, married to the magazine columnist Mayang, has unvoiced sexual problems; they decide to take a ‘second honeymoon’ in Bali, obviously hoping to rekindle their relationship. A chance encounter in the supermarket with their childhood friend Topan (a long-haired photo-journalist, unmarried) leads to them travelling to Bali together. In Bali it emerges that Topan and Mayang had once wanted to marry each other. Harris becomes jealous, accuses Topan of dishonesty and starts a fist-fight. The climactic confrontation and reconciliation are set against the backdrops of traditional masked dances and processions, which poses the question of the protagonists’ identities as ‘modern’ Indonesians in rather crudely schematic terms.
