Program Note
The Hunters deals squarely with bourgeois Greece in the years following the civil war. On New Year′s Eve, 1976, a hunting party stumbles upon a body buried in the snow. Now, as the ruling elite, they must decide
what to do with their discovery of the partisan soldier. At the inquest, each party member - the businessman, publisher, colonel, his wife, politician, collaborating actress, noble and ex-partisan contractor - must come
clean with their actions since the war. When they awake to discover that it was literally a collective dream, they bury the body again, along with their own guilt. The Hunters is a cutting allegory of omnipresent guilt in post-civil war Greece. The Right is put on trial through metaphoric recreations of history as well as through the characters. The hunters perceived wrongs are punished when each dreams his or her own execution by partisans - and each breathes a sigh of relief to find out it was only a dream. The film is a record of the Greek elite′s conscience and a comment on the bourgeois fear of history.
