Program Note
Germany in Autumn is a collective film by some of Germany′s most noted directors: Raine Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlondörff, Edgar Reitz and Alexander Kluge among them The film′s core is the kidnapping and murder of industrialist Hans-Martin Schleyer by the Rote Amee Fraktion and the subsequent suicide of three RAF members. Wanting to ransom Schleyer for the release of RAF leaders Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Carl Rasne the situation spiraled out of control into murder and hijacking. The film mixes documentary, narrative and interviews to shed light on the oppressive political state of Germany in the late 70s. Narrative makes up the majority of the film. The impact that the kidnap/ransom drama, an act of terrorism, had on the public - politically and psychologically - in a country like Germany is where much of the "plot" and themes come from. The suspicion that the suicides were in fact a violent response by the state is what inspired the film. Germany in Autumn is an insightful, impassioned response to the incident, and an artistic and political document of a specific time.
