Program Note
Teenaged Rita is an unruly outsider: she is indifferent to her classmates, who laugh at her behavior, her teachers find her rude, and her parents lock her in as punishment. The nature of Rita′s various stunts evinces her uncertain maneuvering between childhood and womanhood. Later, her rebellious actions spark more significant consequences. Anxious as always to subvert expectations, Rita initiates a relationship with a much younger boy, Fexi. However, she soon realizes that he cannot respond to her desire for sexual intimacy. In a characteristically mercurial move, Rita pursues an encounter with a much older bus driver that leaves her disappointed and jaded. These encounters isolate her even more. It seems that she is not able to break out of her solitude, until one day Rita oversteps the border.
