Program Note
No country has ever experienced an economic and social collapse in peacetime on the scale that Argentina has. Since the onset of dictatorial rule a quarter century ago, the once thriv nation has seen skyrocketing debt, political and financial corruption, destruction and despoilment of national property and ultra-liberalism. This has all been facilitated by international monetary and aid organizations and multi-national conglomerates. The results of Carlos Menem and his ilk′s scorched-earth policies has been famine, a health crisis, sacrificed lives and crushing poverty. Even more shameful is that the poverty and suffering sweeping the country was predictable. Critically acclaimed director Fernando Solanas believes that there is another, better future for Argentina, Latin America and the world, and he lends his considerable voice to the debate around globalization. By examining the how and why - the instruments - of the disaster eroding Argentina now, he retraces the footsteps that led him to cinematic resistance 35 years ago when he made The Hour of the Furnaces (1968). A Social Genocide seeks to expose those who effectively created the Argentinean catastrophe.
