Program Note
′Pink Movie′ refers to Japanese independent pornography, which has continued on for 40 years despite the ups and downs of the film industry, and the rapid growth of the adult video industry during the 1980s. For only a budget of approximately 25 thousand dollars and a one week film shoot, the limitations of such Pink Movies have in fact, opened opportunities for experimentine cinematic creativity rather than being an obstacle. Except for the requiSite sex scenes, the rest of the film is completely under the director′s control. The documentary Pink Ribbon is like an encyclopedia about ′Pink Movies.′ It includes detailed stories regarding Pink Movie history forme through classics such as Violated Angels and Resistance by College Girls, the cultural meaning of Pink Movies, and the survival strategy for low budget independent films in the niche market. World-class director Kiyoshi Kurosawa first opened his world of art through Pink Movie, The Excitement of the Do-Re-Mi-Fa Girl. Film shoots of the famous Pink Movie director, Mitsuru Meike are introduced. Takashi Asai, who also produced features by Derek Jarman, Shu Lea Cheang, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa, is the producer of this film. The title, Pink Ribbon, is inspired by the name of Japan′s authorized movie award, the Blue Ribbon. Through this film, the world of Pink Movies is reproduced with the fully charged spirit of independent cinema. (Nam In-young)
