Program Note
Imelda is the wife of former Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos, who stayed in power for 20 years until forced out of office in 1986. She became an intemational star on the strength of her
brilliant taste, cosmopolitan posture, her beauty and even her singing ability. She used bor husband′s powers just like hers, and her 3,000 pairs of shoes found after the couple fled to Hawaii
made her even more famous. The documentary Imelda studies the duplicity of this so-called ′attractive evil woman,′ based on an in-depth interviews with Imelda herself. Using official footage
of formal occasions, home videos, and interviews with Imelda′s personal designer and pro- and anti-Imelda commentators, this film presents a new angle on Philippine′s modern history. Directe
Ramona Diaz, who grew up during times when it was inconceivable to omit Imelda in the ne focuses on the social mechanics creating Imelda′s image instead of tarnishing Imelda and Mr
Marcos as ′the axis of evil.′ This brilliant film makes us ask ourselves if there is a ′little Imelda inside all of us, whether we want it or not. (Nam In-young)
