For thousands of years, two roads have connected China and Europe, One is the well-known Silk Road on the northern continent, and the other is the ′Tea-Horse Road′ leading from China and southern Tibet to Europe. From the ancient to present times, caravans transporting tealeaves and salt have journeyed along a narroW Path they had made in the middle of the steep slope on the mountain side. This path, along the Nujing River, being so narrow, it does not even allow two people to walk side by side, not to mention a vehicle. Delamu narrates stories of the caravans on this path and the people those caravans come across during thelir soltary journey. The film is the first documentary by director Tian Zhuang-zhuang, who had led the new wave of Chinese films in the 1980s. As if reprimanding human arrogance, the director composes a sacred scene portraying the magnificence of nature and the tiny moving dots of caravans in the same space. Then, he turns to listen to the stories of people living in the town on this path. Madame Ding has a family of 15 who speak 6 different languages. A pastor was in prison for 15 years for his beliefs. A 104-year-old woman has lived through three centuries on the road. A young lama who had fallen in love sometimes feels lonely. Caravan brothers are living with one wife in satisfaction. Scenes taken by using natural light in a singular way once again remind us of the truth that cinema is an art of light, paying silent tribute to the caravan′s small history. (Nam In-young)
