Program Note
Two refugee smugglers dump their cargo near the Czech border. Left behind in their truck, however, is an infant that promptly goes up for sale. At an amusement park, Miluška is accused of trying to steal a baby carriage - complete with baby. Escorted away by her security guard husband, desperate, childless Miluška finds herself in the "market" for a baby. At a university, professor Otakar takes ill during a lecture. His daughter Lenka and her young mother Hana later wait at a clinic to hear of Otakar′s condition. Given the gravity of his situation, Otakar reveals a dark secret about his first wife Vera and their son Martin. Martin returns from New York to see his father for the first time in twenty years. He and his mother visit Otakar at the hospital, where Otakar′s two families uncomfortably assemble for the first time. The ensuing drama of reconciliation, altruism, racism, silence and separation connects the four stories in a purely Central European tale of how ordinary people find strength, courage and redemption, and make sense out of chaos.
