Program Note
A regular weekday morning sees Tom White and his family ready themselves for their days at work and school. On the surface, everything seems fine - but lurking just below the surface is a
deep, unwavering dissatisfaction with a middle-class life. At work, Tom experiences a very public meltdown before he leaves his life for good and slips into the margins. Tom′s tour of the city as a homeless man begins with a street hustler. He goes on to encounter one marginalized soul after the next and sees shocking violence in this world as well. Once Tom′s identity is exposed, he is forced to make a decision about "going back" - assuming that he even can. The how′ and why′ of the homeless street-dweller are questions rarely dealt with, but director Alkinos Tsimilidos created Tom White along with writer Daniel Keene by asking those very questions. The film also deals with the affluent world′s fears of the less fortunate and the role played by stultifying urban life in the decision to “drop out."
