Program Note
Wahab enjoys an easygoing carefree way of life in Montreal. Shortly after a debauched and decadent birthday celebration, the young man of Lebanese descent learns of his father′s death.
His aunts and uncles - the people who raised him - refuse to allow him to be buried with his mother - their sister. Their adamancy on the issue is distressing. As Wahab goes through his
father′s effects, he discovers a series of undelivered audiotapes that expose the truth of his mother′s death, why the family holds his father responsible and the tragic choice she has to make
to ensure Wahab would live. Wahab defies the family and travels to his father′s hometown of Kfar Ryat, Lebanon, to inter him there. In Lebanon, Wahab experiences a brutal encounter with
himself that will jolt him from his cushy North American complacency. Drawing inspiration in parts from Oedipus, Hamlet and Dostoevsky′s The Idiot, first-time
filmmaker Wajdi Mouawad has adapted his own play for the screen.
