Program Note
Three soviet prisoners of war escape a Nazi convoy near Pskov. It is August 1941, and the frontline has shifted yet again. Needing desperately to hide, the three soldiers take refuge in a
local farmer′s barn - the father of the one POW who is also a sniper. In this village there is also a woman the sniper is in love with, and his competition for her
affections is the local polizai. After she spurns the polizai′s advances, he vows to eliminate his unknown competition by wielding his considerable power. He seems to have all the advantages,
as the sniper is hiding from that very power. However, he is a sniper. Our Own is not really a war film. War serves as a backdrop and provides an extreme
environment in which to play out the themes of betrayal, mistrust, cowardice, bravery and distribution of powers. Director Dmitry Meskhiyev wanted to create a story about a village and
explore the everyday relationships within that context. War and polizai only add dramatic conflict to an already interesting and unique environment.
