Program Note
Our Music is divided into three parts: Hell; Purgatory; and Paradise. The first, Hell, is a montage of clips from movies and documentaries showing war, political conflict and genocide across the ages: battleships, gunfire, executions, populations in flight, and destroyed villages from Vietnam, the Crimea, the Middle East and World War II. In Purgatory, the film shows contemporary Sarajevo, a city martyred like many others. Godard, playing himself, is among the guests at a series of European Literary Encounters taking place in the once-ravaged city. This section mixes other real writers and thinkers with fictional characters. The fictional Olga Lerner, a French- Jewish journalist currently based in Israel, is the film′s protagonist. A visit to Mostar Bridge as it is being constructed symbolizes the passage from guilt to forgiveness. In Paradise, Olga finds peace by the water, on a small beach guarded by US Marines. The film is riddled with literary quotations and allusions to film paintings and history. In the end, the film manifests a faith in the enduring strength of words.
