From acclaimed Senegalese director Ousmane Sembène comes a searing indictment of an ancient practice still carried out today in 38 of the 54 member states of the African Union. Some form of female genital mutilation - also referred to as female circumcision - still goes on, and is still robbing women of their dignity and integrity. Four girls escape their village and the ritual of circumcision that comes around every seven years. They flee and seek out the protection of Colle Ardo, a circumcised woman herself who ensured her only daughter would not be subjected to the procedure. Their actions send the village into an uproar, with the traditionalists, the salinde or purifiers, who demand the ritual of purification on one side and those who would seek to protect the girls, the moolaadé or protectors, on the other. Winner of the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes and the second in Sembène′s "Heroic" triptych that began with Faat-Kine, Moolaadé was dedicated to the women who are fighting to abolish the barbaric and draconian legacy.
