As Mila from Mars opens, we see a pregnant and bruised sixteen-year-old girl running away from a clearly dangerous man. She escapes to a remote border village with all of nine citizens: nine elderly people who grow marijuana for a living and who do it for the girl′s earlier pursuer. Regardless of that fact, she stays in the village - and changes it forever. Mila from Mars is about a young woman′s life initiation in an extremely stressful crisis situation. She is afraid of her dodgy past, and she is equally afraid of her future - which holds both her dreams and her nightmares. The low budget, first time director Zornitsa Sophia has created a film that was enormously successful and popular in her native Bulgaria, where enthusiastic young audiences made their impressions audibly clear. Not only was Sophia making her feature debut, but over ten key crew did also, among them the cinematographer, production designer, composer, editor and costume designer. Mila from Mars is an inventive, daring film about the universal theme of growing up and taking responsibility.
