Louis Trebor lives a reclusive life in the mountains near the French-Swiss border. He has a failing heart, yet feels robust and sensuous. After receiving a much needed heart transplant, Louis heads out on a journey to an unidentified South Seas destination. He hopes to reconcile parts of his past with his present situation and to pay a debt that has been haunting him. He is also intent on living a new kind of life: one that is less constrained, contains fewer obstacles and has noregrets. Co-writer and director Claire Denis loosely based the story on the writings of philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, and The Intruder strays from simple, straightforward narrative. Denis has replaced dialogue and conventional cinematic structures with pure visuals, telling the tale through sight and sound. We are given snippets, bits, and pieces. As viewers, we are forced to put the fractured story together ourselves. While maintaining her capacity for sharp investigations of the human condition - a characteristic of her work - the film is Denis′ most stylistically avant-garde yet and an example of pure cinema.
